This extraordinary scenery is shaped by the River Melfa, which flows through the Gorge to the picturesque Liri Valley. Starting from Casalvieri, the Melfa river winds for several kilometres between imposing rock faces.

The itinerary along the course of the river offers typical freshwater experiences of mountain streams. On either side, on the right-hand side, is the charming Tracciolino, a winding 12-kilometre-long road connecting the picturesque municipalities of Casalvieri and Roccasecca.

The Tracciolino, just as fascinating and wild as the Gorges it crosses, offers breathtaking views of the river, set between majestic mountain walls, with passages between rocks of unquestionable spectacularity. Ravines, gorges and limestone gullies punctuate the landscape of the Gorge, creating a unique atmosphere.

The left bank of the river is intensely wooded, while the right bank has rocky, wooded and dry stretches. On the steeper slope, several species of birds of prey have made the area their habitat. From the end of April to September, the river tends to dry up or almost dry out due to the regulation of the flow through two dams upstream. In contrast, from October to March, the river becomes rushing, offering the opportunity for canoeists to challenge its tumultuous waters.
