Giustino was a great intellectual and member of the upper echelons of the Bourbon Court of Ferdinand II, who held prestigious positions as President of the Royal Bourbon Library, Professor of the History of Councils at the University of Naples, and Member of the General Council of Public Education.

He was an expert in sacred archaeology, papyrology and palaeography, and was also the interpreter of the famous ‘Herculaneum papyri’. In 1861, after the unification of Italy, Quadrari left Naples to return to his hometown, San Donato Val di Comino, where he restored his old paternal house located in Piazza Tolosa, today known as Piazza Giustino Quadrari.

The square is home to an elegant 18th-century palace of the Vanvitellian school, built and restored by skilled Sandonatese workers to a design by a Neapolitan architect.

Inside the palace, along the wall of the staircase, it is possible to admire ancient epigraphs from the Roman era found in the San Donato area, which have aroused great interest among scholars such as Solin and Mommsen, who recorded them in his famous C.I.L. during his visit in 1876. Piazza Giustino Quadrari is a place rich in history and culture that is well worth a visit during your stay in San Donato Val di Comino.
