Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the town expanded towards the valley. In the 18th century, the cathedral was enlarged and enriched with beautiful Baroque decorations, such as the façade that features pilasters and columns, a Mistilinear tympanum in the centre and two volutes connecting the wings.
In addition, the church houses a choir art and a fine pipe organ made by Cesare Catarinozzi. Under the high altar, the body of St Constance, a martyr of the early Christian persecutions, is preserved.
Her remains were moved to the Cathedral in 1756 and since then, every last Sunday in August, the town celebrates St Constance with a solemn procession, fireworks, a market and an onion menu.
This church is a must for anyone visiting the town and is an important place of worship for the people of Sandonata.
