The architectural structure was built according to the models of military economy and has not undergone philological or mannerist restoration, thus retaining its original medieval form. The fortress is surrounded by a first circle of walls 5 metres high and a second circle of walls protecting the main building, which consists of four scarp walls, four corner towers and a central keep.
Since the 1990s, the castle has been owned by the municipality of Alvito, which is currently reconstructing and consolidating the parts that were destroyed. The structure was entrusted to architect Giulio Rossetti for reconstruction, who used original stones to rebuild some of the towers, battlements and main entrances. Parts of the castle are still being rebuilt today.
During the summer, the castle hosts the cultural event “Castello Reggae”, in which artists and musicians perform performances inspired by Caribbean culture, using instruments and sounds typical of reggae, ska and rhythm and blues music. There is also an aviary in one of the inner courtyards.
