The castle stands on a travertine rock that divides the Liri River into two branches and creates the famous waterfalls, the Cascata Verticale and the Cascata del Valcatoio.

These waterfalls are unique in the world because they plunge into a built-up area and are 27 metres high. The earliest historical records of the castle date back to 1004 when the monks of Montecassino transformed some of the present buildings into a place of prayer and peace. Later, the castle served as a refuge for rural populations and their livestock during Turkish and Saracen raids.

In the 15th century, the Sorano state became a county dependent on the king of Naples, with the castle becoming the residence of the first duke Leonardo Della Rovere. In the following period, the castle was the seat of a famous conspiracy of Abruzzi barons against the Aragonese.

In 1579, Pope Gregory XIII acquired the entire Duchy of Sora, with the castle being enlarged and embellished by successive Boncompagni dukes. The Boncompagni Castle in Isola del Liri is an important piece of Italian history and a must-see for anyone visiting the Province of Frosinone.

With its unique waterfalls, the castle offers an unforgettable experience for visitors. The castle has been enlarged and embellished over the centuries, with the names of the Dukes and the coats of arms of the related families visible on the doors and decorative bands. This monument is a testimony to Italian history, architecture and art.
