In 1799, the French garrison settled in the alley called Rua and controlled the entrance to the town. Abbot Carlo Coletti described how the French imposed contributions and created anarchy. However, with the arrival of the allied armies, the French invaders were driven out of the Kingdom and the country found peace and quiet.
During their presence, the French commander decided to use the Sanctuary of San Donato as a barracks, despite Abbot Coletti’s prohibitions. However, the officer was struck by epileptic disease after invading the sanctuary and fell to his knees in front of the statue of the saint. Once healed, the commander recognized his mistake and left the sanctuary together with his soldiers, honoring the saint.
The Arch of the French is today a monument to this history and a place of tourist interest for those who want to learn about the history of the past and admire the architectural beauty. Its unique design and central location in the city make it an ideal place to stop during a tour of the area.
