The Rifugio dei Briganti is a structure that encompasses the history and culture of our lands. A refuge from the frenetic life of the city.
The Rifugio dei Briganti, while maintaining the peculiarities of a house, offers services on par with a luxury hotel and finishes in an ancient-modern style.
The territory of San Donato Val di Comino was a crossroads of gangs of brigands, including that of Marco Sciarra, the terror of central-southern Italy in the 16th century. The famous brigand decided to stop in San Donato for a few days, before returning to Abruzzo. Among the bandits who followed him was also Bernardino Cocuzzo from San Donato, nicknamed “Mancino”, an unscrupulous man whose end was never known.
Via Taverna, which crosses San Donato, led to the ancient Marsicana road, of great importance at that time for the intense commercial traffic to and from Abruzzo. In 1860, with the defeat of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, even in San Donato the population was divided between “pro-Bourbons” and “pro-Piedmontese”. Many people from San Donato swore allegiance to Francis II of Bourbon and fought for him, dreaming of giving the deposed sovereign back the ancient Kingdom. Many – like the learned Giustino Quadrari and the notary Domenico Rufo – were unjustly arrested.
Among the most legendary figures of the time was Rosa Cedrone, “the Junoesque and determined wife of the bandit leader Cedrone”, as Paola Staccioli describes her in “I briganti della campagna romana” (Newton Compton, 1997). Rosa fought in the 1960s dressed as a man alongside her companion. During a clash in Veroli between bandits and grenadiers during the kidnapping of a landowner from Filettino, Rosa fell badly while trying to save a ditch. Towered over by an imposing soldier, she could do nothing but declare surrender. The policeman then approached to get the “man” out of the ditch; at this point Rosa gathered all her strength, grabbed his neck violently, trying to strangle him, and she probably would have succeeded if another soldier had not intervened and killed her with a rifle shot to the right side. Only after her death did the grenadiers, with great astonishment, realize that it was a woman.
In order to eradicate the phenomenon of brigands, in 1875 General Pallavicini was sent to San Donato. Today, the Rifugio dei Briganti offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in this fascinating story full of legendary characters, offering visitors a unique and exciting experience.
