From the 16th century

The history of brigandage

The territory of San Donato Val di Comino was a crossroads for gangs of bandits, including that of Marco Sciarra, the terror of central-southern Italy in the 16th century. The famous bandit decided to stop in San Donato for a few days, before returning to Abruzzo. Among the bandits who followed him there was also Bernardino Cocuzzo from San Donato, nicknamed “Mancino”, an unscrupulous man whose end was never known.

The Via Taverna, which crosses San Donato, led to the ancient Marsicana road, of great importance in those times due to the intense commercial traffic to and from Abruzzo. In 1860, with the defeat of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, even in San Donato the population was divided between “pro-Bourbon” and “pro-Piedmontese”. There were numerous people from San Donato who swore loyalty to Francis II of Bourbon and fought for him, dreaming of giving the ancient Kingdom back to the ousted sovereign. Many – such as the learned Giustino Quadrari and the notary Domenico Rufo – were unjustly arrested.

Among the most legendary characters of the time was Rosa Cedrone, “the Junoesque and determined wife of the bandit leader Cedrone”, as Paola Staccioli describes her in “The brigands of the Roman countryside” (Newton Compton, 1997). Rosa fought in the sixties of the last century dressed as a man alongside her partner. During a clash that took place in Veroli between brigands and grenadiers during the kidnapping of a landowner from Filettino, Rosa fell badly while she was trying to save a ditch. Towered over by an imposing soldier, she could not help but declare her surrender. The cop then approached to get the “man” out of the ditch; at this point Rosa, gathered all her strength, violently grabbed her neck trying to strangle him, and she probably would have even succeeded if another soldier hadn’t intervened and killed her with a rifle shot to her right side . Only after her death did the grenadiers, with enormous amazement, realize that she was a woman.

To eradicate the phenomenon of brigands, General Pallavicini was sent to San Donato in 1875. Today, the Rifugio dei Briganti offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in this fascinating history full of legendary characters, offering the visitor a unique and exciting experience. Come and discover the Rifugio dei Briganti and its extraordinary history!
